more from my india sketchbook...
on the left, 'the pink house' at puri in the moonlight, where i stayed a fair while. it was right on the beach, that's sand in the foreground...
and to the right, a penis yogi, in banares (varanasi). yes, folks, he wowed the crowds with his penis stunts! he wound his member round his trident and then tucked the whole thing behind him (top right corner), claiming to represent the whole of humankind, man and woman.

some years back i spent six months in india. i took my sketchbook around with me a fair bit. here's an unusually naturalistic drawing i made of a tailor making me a shirt, in a little fishing village called puri in the state of orissa.
i just chose some material for a shirt, and asked if i could watch and sketch while it was made for me.

nearby gobinda's tailor shop was a tiny government bhang shop, little more than a narrow counter and an official behind a glass screen doling out measures of legal bhang (weed) much like stamps from a post office.
puri also has a lovely beach, but unfortunately it was the locals' toilet. early every morning it looked like this.

i didn't go swimming much.

*new feature starting today!*
anyone who knows me will tell you that when there's work to be done, i can always be relied on...to commemmorate the event with a drawing...
this is from a few years back when my girlfriend martha was putting a new back door on.

(in my defence, she is a trained carpenter) (oh and one other thing -- she's not actually a hunchback)
(edit -- martha asks me to point out that she was pregnant at this point in time too)
