mr meecher patch for this week's strip...

...in the bumper 44-page issue of the dandy on sale now -- complete with toxic slime and squidgy eyeballs!

i was rather distressed to find when i first leafed through my issue that an extra mr meecher has somehow appeared in the penultimate panel of this week's strip. it's a mr m from the maths strip a few weeks back, plus, possibly even more confusingly, a speech bubble from that strip. nobody seems to quite know how it happened, but it does rather spoil the page, i think. may sound precious, but y'know, a lot of work goes into these pages...
here's how the panel in question SHOULD have looked.

EDIT -- thanks to rick eades for this idea -- print off this picture (you'll need to reduce it slightly) and patch it over in your comic!

dandy HQ also decided, in their infinite wisdom, not to use my specially drawn title pic (preferring to sample a meecher from the page) so, save it going to waste, here it is:

the rest of the comic is great!

yep, this week *mr meecher the uncool teacher* gets to spread out over two pages, in a crazy pirate-based drama lesson story...

i've mentioned before that there are some autobiographical elements to mr meecher, and this week that is especially true, as i trained to teach english and drama, and the approach mr m takes is based on a real way of leading drama with children, called whole group improvisation. it's a great way to teach drama if you're skilled enough to carry it off, and i'm sure there are some drama teachers who do it brilliantly, but in my hands the approach led to chaos not far short of the trouble mr m gets into this week.

there's loads of other great stuff in the comic this week, including two brill new strips, the etherington bros' *yore*, and andy fanton's *boo* (alright boo started last week, but it's still new-ish)

there's also a READER SURVEY this week, which you can complete in the comic and send in, or alternatively you can take part in it HERE -- obviously i'd be eternally grateful if you've enjoyed mr m and want to read more of his further adventures, if you'd take a moment to cast him a vote.
and if you press-gang your granny, your auntie dot, and your pet bullfinch into doing the same, i might even buy you a beer.
oh and if you do take part you can win an ipod touch, or if you're REALLY lucky a free dandy subscription!

btw, i said a few weeks ago that mr meecher was going to be a run of 6, but i've recently been working on some more strips which will extend the run to ten episodes. including, next week, a double-pager.

meanwhile, it seems to be becoming a bit of a habit, this -- friday fan-art -- but i came across this little biro doodle which i'd forgotten about, so i thought i'd bung it up:

sometimes you get an idea for a new caption for an old cartoon which hasn't sold. this was the case here, i drew this originally back in 2008 with the caption 'captain's blog, stardate 54342.1: a reminder; all obscene comments will be deleted immediately. yes, i'm talking to you, klingons'

andy fanton, creator of 'george vs dragon' in the dandy, has been drawing the vintage beano character 'biffo the bear' -- it got me fancying joining in, especially after the fun i had drawing dennis last week, plus i've always loved animal toons, so here's my quick go at biffo:

don't forget, the new dandy is out, this week mr meecher is teaching.. er, not a lot really... let's say he's having a few discipline problems...

EDIT -- i've got reservations about the overcutesification (made-up word!) of comic characters, so on reflection i decided that the little guy above would be better not as biffo but as one of biffo's nephews cuddly and dudley (must admit i had to google that) who cropped up from time to time in the strip. and i've had another bash at biffo, here:

meanwhile, the talented mr rick eades has been joining in the biffo-related fun here

i do seem to be getting quite a lot of material from New Media these days...
the colours printed a bit weird in the magazine, the blue and grey virtually disappeared, and the buffalo are almost the same colour as the ground. don't know how that happened. anyway, here it is coloured as i intended it. er, depending on the colour settings of your monitor, of course...

oops! just noticed i missed the horns of the nearest buffalo!

this episode was based on actual lesson from a brief spell i had as a teacher in the 1990s. in fact, quite a lot of the strip is based on that spell -- you can perhaps see why it was so brief...

it's a great issue -- among others an excellent bananaman from wayne thompson (with a guest appearance from bully beef and chips), another fine george vs dragon by andy fanton, and some particularly great stuff from jamie smart -- in fact i was moved to pull out a brush and have a go at drawing jamie-style -- so here's my interpretation of jamie's interpretation of desperate dan:

while i was in the mood i also made a very quick little sketch of another classic dc thomson character:
Photobucket
it'd be great fun to do a little comic about the above, in this style, but dc thomson's lawyers might not be so keen.

all in all, if you haven't checked out the new 'dandy' yet, this would be a great issue to jump in at -- so please consider getting a copy for your kids/grandkids/yourself/your dog -- this classic british title needs support!

mr meecher (2nd episode out of 6) is back in *the dandy* this week, teaching geography in his own inimitable style. there's pain, there's heartache, and there's papier-maché.
Photobucket
much other comics goodness in there too -- please go buy a copy immediately!
