wiLbur's review of 2008
well, i may as well make this an annual run through some of the topical cartoons i've drawn throughout the year...this year it's the editors' pick -- well, largely -- almost all of these appeared in publications such as private eye, reader's digest, prospect and the like....
without further ado, here are the cartoons..
there were concerns about the increasing size of glasses used to serve alcohol in pubs...
and reports of prisons being a bit too comfy...
food prices went through the roof...
xmas gag on the same theme...
and kids in UK cities killed each other with guns and knives with alarming regularity..
there were reports of an increase in the number of young women committing offences...
then there was the olympics. actually, this one wasn't published, but i like it and it was my only olympics cartoon so here it is..
there was a new version of brideshead in cinemas...
and a new batman film, too, at a time when the uk's prime minister gordon brown was having some not inconsiderable popularity issues...
but of course the biggest issue of the year had to be the credit crunch -- which also happens to be a pretty good subject for cartoons...here are a few of mine on the subject...
there was a run on the british bank 'northern rock', which saw customers at branches all over the country queueing to withdraw their money...
banks went from lending huge mortgages to anyone they could drag in from the street to virtually shutting up shop...
it was a tremendous year for suicidal businessmen jokes...
but let's finish on a brighter note...in the US, barack obama was elected president -- the first black man to hold the post, and a ray of hope for the age...
meanwhile, over here in blighty, imperfectly-shaped vegetables were allowed back in the country as 'i'm a celebrity get me out of here' aired again (non-brits probably won't get this one)
and that's about it from me for 2008...
happy new year everyone!
