wiLbur's review of 2007
i know, i'm rather tardy with this, but the idea for putting my redundant topical cartoons from last year to some use only just occurred to me....and it is still january....

last year was the first year i've drawn many topicals -- a few of these were published in private eye, the spectator, prospect and the like, but it's a tricky business, you've got to be quick with it, i found, or the story could be dead in the water before you've sent it anywhere, or some other cartoonist'll beat you to it...

anyway, here are the cartoons...

* * * * *

the wii was launched but had some initial teething troubles...
Photobucket

england's cricketers had a woeful winter tour and the search was on for a new opening batsman, amid problems with certain members of the team drinking rather a lot...
Photobucket
(geoff thompson (i think) beat me to this one in the spectator)

an examining board caused a fuss when it removed ancient history from its syllabus -- so it changed its mind...Photobucket

the smoking ban was introduced in england, no smoking allowed inside in public places...
Photobucket

...and all public places, including churches, now by law had to display no smoking signs...
Photobucket

there was talk of a new cold war...
Photobucket

gordon brown took over as britain's prime minister...
Photobucket

and tony blair got a new job...
Photobucket

while brown basked in a short-lived honeymoon period, the opposition leader david cameron seemed to be trying a bit too hard...
Photobucket

in the autumn, loads of faulty toys were recalled to china...
Photobucket

britain's cattle were hit by bluetongue disease...
Photobucket

our troops were battling it out in iraq and afghanistan, but there was plenty of gunfighting going on at home, too..
Photobucket

california was ravaged by forest fire...
Photobucket

and as the smoking ban bedded in, the economy began to show signs of weakening..
Photobucket

* * * * *

it's not supposed to be a comprehensive review of the year, it's just whichever events i happened to make a cartoon about....
and that's probably quite enough of that!

Thank you very much for sharing those with us! This should be a yearly event.

I remember when I first started drawing comics, I was still amateur in craft and speed. Of course, that is the time I tried my hand at political/editorial cartoons. They are really hard to come up with a single image that encapsulates what you want to say while not having it too cliche. Furthermore there is the race to get it illustrated in time before it is yesterday's news. Furthermore, you have to have it well thought out and communicated in a way that will not offend people or send the wrong message. Political/editorial cartooning is a tricky business.

These are a great collection of political/editorial cartoons! Here is to a full a healthy year of them from you in 2008!

thanks david -- most kind. i'll do my best...
i wax and wane a bit on doing this sort of very topical stuff, though --there's such a small window for selling them, compared to a general gag which you can sell YEARS after drawing it...
